Investigation on Impact of Heat Input on Microstructural, Mechanical, and Intergranular Corrosion Properties of Gas Tungsten Arc-Welded Ti-Stabilized 439 Ferritic Stainless Steel

Abstract In the present study, gas tungsten arc welding was employed to weld Ti-stabilized 439 ferritic stainless steel using 308L austenitic filler electrode with varying heat input, i.e., low input (LHI) and high (HHI). The optical microstructure revealed formation of retained austenite (RA) ferrite in zone (WZ), whereas peppery structure consisting chromium-rich carbides were observed heat-affected for both weldments. volumetric fraction RA calculated X-ray diffraction analysis. RA’s content decreased, grain size WZ increased an increase input. local misorientation boundary distribution welded region investigated by electron backscattered diffraction. LHI weldment depicted higher micro-hardness tensile strength attributed as compared HHI; however, opposite trend intergranular corrosion resistance.
